100 Years of Manila Polo Club: A Glimpse of History

The clubhouse, the kitchen and the service buildings were made of native materials.

The pagoda-like water tower was the distinctive feature of the Club for years until, for safety reasons, it had to be dismantled.

The curious but uninvited check the scoreboard of a tournament exhibition in February 1919.

Men and women alike turned up in their Sunday best at the first International Polo Tournament in 1910.

A match at the Pasay polo field in February 1912 pitted the Civil Government against the Free Booters.

With the founding of the Polo Club, polo became an established fact in Manila.

The first polo team to emerge after the war in February 1952, was composed of (from left) Dr. Oscar Jacinto and Enrique Zobel and his father, Jacobo.

The American community celebrated Independence Day on July 4, 1958, at the Main Lounge.

For the Zobel Cup on March 6, 1960, the men came in suits or barong, and the women in stylish dresses and stiletto heels.

The new Manila Polo Club was successfully inaugurated on July 4, 1949. Among the guests were (from left) Frank Lidell, John Carmichael, Thomas Kenneth and J.A. Thomas.
